A rice sensory bin is the little black dress of screen-free play — cheap, endlessly adaptable, and calming for busy little hands. Here’s exactly how to make one, from dyeing the rice to keeping the mess (mostly) contained.
What you’ll need
- 2–3 cups uncooked white rice
- 1 tsp white vinegar (helps the colour stick)
- A few drops of liquid or gel food colouring
- A ziplock bag or bowl for mixing
- A tray, bin, or Flisat/Trofast insert
- Scoops, cups, spoons and small containers
How to dye the rice
- Add rice to a bag, then the vinegar and colouring.
- Seal and shake until every grain is coated.
- Spread on a baking tray to dry (30–60 minutes).
- Repeat for each colour, then layer or combine.
Setting up the bin
Pour the dry rice into your tray or insert, add your scoops and a few themed extras, and sit your toddler somewhere easy to sweep. A deep tray keeps most of the rice where it belongs.
Want to switch it up?
Swap the rice for dried chickpeas, oats, pasta or split peas for a whole new texture.
Safety note: always supervise. Rice isn’t taste-safe for babies who still mouth everything — see our taste-safe post for under-2s.
